We invite you to an exciting performance “Caligula” staged by the Kyiv Franko Theater. This is a powerful and concentrated theatrical statement about power, fear, and the limits of human freedom. Such a story will leave no one indifferent.
Tyranny as a way to understand the world
The play “Caligula” with an age restriction of 16+ is based on the play by the French novelist, philosopher, and Nobel Prize laureate Albert Camus. The author of the theatrical adaptation and director is – the talented Ivan Uryvsky, known for productions “Mary Stuart”, “Lymerivna”, “The Konotop Witch”, and others.
At the center of the story is the Roman Emperor Caligula, whose power turns into a tool to search for the meaning of existence. After the death of his sister and lover Drusilla, he comes to the tragic realization: human life inevitably ends with death, and therefore happiness is an illusion. Faced with this truth, he decides to use absolute power to test the limits of human potential and his own freedom. Trying to return the meaning of being, the emperor begins to act, but his actions bring only chaos and death.
The play “Caligula” tours Ukraine
The Franko Theater's production surprises with its compact format and the strength of its impact. The scenographer- Petro Bohomazov created a laconic scene design – a unique space of fear. The action takes place inside a metal cube, reminiscent of a closed container – a space with no exit, under the tyrant's rule. A complex system of latches and boxes allows the characters to unexpectedly appear in ephemeral windows, passages, and disappear. And this fascinates and frightens at the same time. As a result, a dense theatrical space arises, from which it is impossible to look away – the play “Caligula” holds the viewer's attention until the last minute. Come and see for yourself!
